This talk is hosted in collaboration with Archiboo and is part of the London Festival of Architecture 2015. Part of the mini-season Mobile Phones to Drones: how technology is changing architectural photography

Free from their original militarised applications drones are increasingly being used as a cinematic tool offering a new perspective on the city. Now employed within the arsenal of not only photographers but also designers, drones are being reimagined as storytelling devices, providing insights into present landscapes and opportunities to speculate on future urbanisms.

In this hands-on workshop architect Liam Young will discuss drone culture and the implications of the technology on the city as well as demonstrate the mechanics of drone construction, flight behaviour and aerial cinematography.

There are a limited number of places for this workshop. We will work in a small group, offering the opportunity discuss and asks questions. This workshop is suitable for all levels of knowledge and experience – for those wishing to learn more about drone practicalities and capabilities, or simply those intrigued by the technology!

About Liam Young
Young recently developed the Drone Orchestra with John Cale, in which a choreographed ensemble of drones took flight in a sell out season at the Barbican theatre. Young is co-founder of London based think tank TOMORROW’S THOUGHTS TODAY and the ‘Unknown Fields Division’ nomadic workshop. His projects include ‘Under Tomorrows Sky’ a science fiction movie set for a fictional future city developed through collaborations with scientists and technologists and ‘Electronic Countermeasures’, a swarm of quadcopter drones that drift through the city broadcasting a pirate internet and file sharing hub.​
