Book Club - Satire and the City Cont’d

bookclub5

The urban environment has long been a literary tool for political comment, satire and parody.  This will be explored through four dystopian texts over two book club sessions.

Led by Jack Self

        Reading list for Session 2:

      • Paris in the C20th, Jules Verne —  1863. Set in Paris, 1960, in a society which only values business and technology. Prescient images of Internet, fax, digital cameras and “electronic synthetic music” with no melody, only base.
      • The Machine Stops, E.M. Forster — 1909. Predicts instant messaging, the Internet. Set in a world where people live underground in honeycomb rooms and never engage each other face to face.

Attendees of Book Club receive 20% off the reading list books at the   AA Bookshop
